health coverage before the ACABEFORE: Of 312 million total U.S. residents, just under half the population had employer-based health coverage, with Medicare and Medicaid making up another third of coverage. Another 4 million were covered through the Indian Health Service and other public healthcare programs, leaving around 11 million people enrolled on the private individual market and about 42 million uninsured.

AFTER: Coverage through Medicaid increased from about 17.9 percent to about 21.8 percent. Coverage in the individual market climbed from around 3.5 percent to around 4.9 percent (both ACA exchange and off-exchange policies). The total number of uninsured in the U.S. dropped from around 13.6 percent to around 9.9 percent.
